Attica is located on the eastern side of mainland Greece. At the heart of Attica is Athens, the capital city of Greece and the most populated city in the country. Athens is situated in the middle of a basin, surrounded by four mountains:
Mt. Pendeli in the northeast, Mt. Parnitha in the north and Mt. Ymittos in the east. On the city's western side are the Egaleo hills and to the southwest lies the Saronic Gulf and port of Piraeus. Southeast of Athens is the coastal area Sounio and port of Lavrio.
In the past decade the city has had a sudden boost in industry and has greatly developed its infrastructure (largely due to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games). This has resulted in a rapid expansion of the Greater Athens region to rural areas of Attica.
